Children’s Book Analysis
The book I choose was “And Tango Makes Three”
Author by Justin Richardson & Peter Parnell
Illustrated by Henry Cole
Year text copyright - 2005, Library of Congress Cataloging-in-Publication Data – 1963
This story takes place in the middle of New York City at a park called Central Park. There is a zoo at this park and there are many penguins that live there. The story starts off by talking about all the different animal families in the zoo. It stops at the penguin families to tell us of a penguin family that is different from all the other penguin families. This family had two daddies. The male penguins got to become a family because the zoo keeper gave them an abandoned egg to hatch. The male penguins did everything that the other mommy and daddy families did. The only difference between the families is that one of the families has two daddies and the rest of the families have a mommy and a daddy.
I believe that the zoo keeper had wisdom because he is the one that gave the two male penguins an abandoned egg so that the two male penguins could have a family too. The male penguins showed many signs of wanting to become parents because every day they got their nest ready like the other penguins. The consequences of the two male penguins behaviors was positive because they were able to show the zoo keeper that they wanted to be parents and they were great parents. The language in this story was all positive. The story only talked in a positively about how there are lots of different kinds of families out there and the anything that is important is that you’re in a family full of love. I feel that this story was wrote very political correct and the pictures are very true to what the animals look like in real life. The only problem I could see with this story besides that there is two daddies (if that bothers someone) is that the author talks in “Author’s note” (back of book) about how these are the only two male penguins that have family. With that being said someone could use it in a negative way and say, see its normal for two male penguins to have a family so it’s not ok to live like that. It's wrong. I feel that there is no stereotype going on because both the male and female penguins help lay their eggs. They take turns, one of the penguins was always sitting on the egg. They are working as team to hatch the egg.
I would recommend this book because I think it is a very well written story about how all that matters is that everyone lives in a loving family environment. What doesn’t matter is how the family is made up.

Sounds like a super cute story! I was interested to hear that the male penguins do just as much work as the female penguins in terms of parenting. I like the overall point of the story that it doesn't matter what the family consists of or how they came together, as long as the love is there then so is family. Great job!
ReplyDeleteHey, Skyler. I think you did good job on your analysis. Basically, this story shows a different type of family. My book is also about a boy who has two daddies. I am not sure that the main theme is homosexuality and gay acceptance or another. But for me, it feels the author wanted to explain that it does not matter if there are two daddies in a family with using cute penguins and loving story. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteBased on your analysis this book sounds like a great addition to a children's classroom. I like how you mention that even thought the penguin family had two dad's, "the male penguin family did everything that the other mommy and daddy families did." I understand that this story may face criticism but I think that the overall message sounds very positive and uplifting. Thank you for the great analysis!
ReplyDeleteI like this story. This story can be use in homosexual issue. It would be helpful for children to understand why some families have two moms or two dads. I would like to read and share with my children this book because it seems very positive story. Good job.
ReplyDeleteI like that you chose this story because it tells a story to kids that doesn't directly show the problems in racism, but shows an example to relate racism. Not only that, but I like that it shows a situation that involves same sex parents. The only suggestion I have is to make sure your message in regards to the Author's note is more clear because I had a hard time understanding what it was you were trying to point out. I learned that this story actually occurred in a zoo.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad someone chose this book! I was between this book and the one that I did pick for a while, and I'm glad there is now analysis' on both! I think its great that this was based on an actual event, I thought it was first just a children's book. I think that the fact that it was real shows just how different families can be no matter the species.
ReplyDeleteI feel that this is an excellent book to read to children!! I love that the story is perfect for children to understand it in a very friendly and nonsexual way of learning about two Dad families or two Mom families. I have always felt that introducing books with people whom are getting married or kissing or loving each other is much more difficult to explain to a child rather than a book about two daddy penguins who both love the baby who came out of the egg they hatched together. Its a much easier concept for children to understand. Great analysis!
